The current DA’s lack of experience as a prosecutor, and her unwillingness to work with law enforcement to charge drug and property crimes, has led to a dramatic drop in prosecutions. When people who have been arrested for serious crimes are released from custody with no consequence, they are encouraged to commit more crimes without the help they need to lead a more productive life.
Mary Knox will bring a lifetime of experience to the DA’s office. From advocating for victim’s rights to winning challenging, high profile cases, Mary is ready to bring fresh leadership to the District Attorney’s office starting on day one.
Mary has prosecuted and won high profile cases against some of the most notorious criminals in Contra Costa’s history. This year, Mary used DNA evidence to convict Mitchell Bacom for the 1980 kidnapping, rape, and murder of 14-year-old Suzanne Bombardier. The murderer will get a life sentence without the possibility of parole, ending Suzie’s family’s’ 42-year quest for justice. Numerous local officials and statewide organizations have recognized Mary’s prosecutorial record. She has received the CNOA’s “Narcotic Prosecutor of the Year” award for the State of California and awards for Meritorious Service by Congressman George Miller and Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors.
Mary designed and implemented the Freeway Security Network to combat the rise in shootings and murders on Contra Costa freeways. She designed a “first of its kind” integrated system of ShotSpotter, pan-tilt zoom cameras, and license plate readers on our freeways and obtained $3.5 million in funding from CalSTA. This new technology on our freeways enhances public safety, increases transparency in investigations, and reduces violence.
The current DA has not adequately addressed the epidemic of organized robberies like the recent one at Nordstrom in Walnut Creek. It is essential to the future of public safety in Contra Costa County to send a very clear message to criminals that we WILL effectively, justly, and fairly enforce our laws. Mary has a Three-Point plan to address retail theft.

Mary is the President of “get VOCAL for Victims”, a nonprofit organization providing legal representation to crime victims. The organization provides victims and their families a critical voice in criminal proceedings.
Mary designed a $3 million grant for the Youth Justice Initiative to keep our children in school. She also co-authored a grant application that dedicated $3.5 million to sex and labor trafficking prosecution. Mary brings the experience to advance critical prosecution initiatives.
